What we collect, why, who helps us run Beer KC, and the choices you have
Who we are
Beer KC ("Beer KC," "we," "us") is a Kansas City craft beer discovery app and website at beerkc.app. This policy covers the Beer KC website, web app and mobile apps (the "Platform"). Questions? Email support@beerkc.app.
What we collect
Information you give us
- Your email address, which we use to send your sign-in code and to identify your account.
- Your username, avatar, city, state and home area, which you choose when you set up your profile.
- Your notification choices and the date you finished setup.
- What you do in the app: check-ins, beer and brewery ratings and reviews, favorites, event RSVPs, crawl progress, and the badges and level you earn from them.
- The questions you type into Ask Beer KC.
- If you are an advertiser: your business name, category, area, ad content, and billing details, which are handled by Stripe (see section 4).
- Messages you send us, such as support requests.
Information from Google or Apple
If you choose to sign in with Google or Apple, they tell us your email address and may share your name and profile photo. We use the email to create or find your account. We do not receive your Google or Apple password.
Information collected automatically
- When you sign in (the time, so we can keep your session secure and see that accounts are active).
- Basic technical data any website receives, such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you request. Our hosting provider keeps these in short-lived logs for security and reliability.
- Data stored in your browser or phone (local storage) to keep you signed in and remember choices like your avatar and filters. We do not use advertising cookies or cross-site trackers.
How we use it
- To run Beer KC: sign you in, show your profile, count your check-ins, award badges and levels, and rank the leaderboards.
- To show you breweries, beers, events and crawls near you and answer your questions in Ask Beer KC.
- To send the notifications you opted into. You can change these any time in Settings.
- To keep the Platform safe: preventing fraud and abuse, enforcing our Terms, and fixing problems.
- To count how many people see and tap each ad. These counts are anonymous and do not identify you.
- To meet legal obligations.
We do not use your information for behavioral advertising, and we do not sell it.
Who else handles your information
We use these providers to run Beer KC. Each handles your information only to provide its service to us, under its own terms and privacy policy.
- Supabase: our database and sign-in system. Your account, profile and activity are stored here.
- Cloudflare: hosts and delivers the website and web app.
- Anthropic: the AI behind Ask Beer KC. We send it your question, the last few messages of the conversation, and, if you are signed in, your username, favorite beer styles and recent check-ins so answers can be personal. If you allow location, we also send your position to find places near you. We do not save the text of your questions in our database.
- Stripe: processes advertiser payments. Card details go straight to Stripe; we never see or store full card numbers.
- Google and Apple: only if you choose to sign in with them.
- OpenStreetMap: map tiles on our maps and place search when someone builds a crawl. Your search text and, for map tiles, your IP address are sent to them.
- Google Fonts: delivers the app's typefaces, so your IP address reaches Google when a page loads.
- Our email delivery provider: sends your sign-in codes and any notifications you have asked for.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect people's safety, or as part of a sale or reorganization of Beer KC, in which case we will tell you if your information would be handled under a different policy.
What other members can see
Your username, avatar, level, badges, ratings and reviews can be seen by other people, and check-in counts appear on leaderboards and area rankings. Your email address, city, state and notification choices are not shown to other members. Please do not put personal information in your username or reviews.
Breweries and advertisers do not receive your personal information. The reports advertisers see are anonymous totals, such as how many times an ad was shown or tapped.
Your location
We ask your device for your location only when you use a feature that needs it, such as checking in at a brewery or sorting places by distance. You can say no, or turn location off in your browser or phone settings, and most of the app still works.
When you check in, we confirm you are close to the brewery and record how far away you were and how accurate your device's reading was. We do not store your coordinates.
How long we keep it, and deleting your account
- We keep your account information and activity for as long as your account is open.
- You can delete your account at any time in More → Account & Security → Delete account. This removes your profile details (username, avatar, city, state and home area), your check-ins, favorites, event RSVPs, crawl progress and notification choices, and signs you out.
- To have the rest erased too (your sign-in email, reviews and sign-in history), email support@beerkc.app from the address on your account. We will complete the request within 30 days and confirm when it is done.
- Backups can hold deleted information for a limited time before they are overwritten.
- We may keep limited records we need to meet legal obligations, resolve disputes, or prevent fraud, such as proof that an account was removed.
Your choices and rights
- See and edit your profile in the app. Settings lets you change your username, location details and notifications.
- Ask us for a copy of the information we hold about you, or to correct or delete it, by emailing support@beerkc.app.
- Say no to location, and withdraw location permission at any time.
- Stop notifications in Settings.
Depending on where you live, privacy laws may give you additional rights, such as the right to know what we collect, to delete it, to correct it, and not to be treated differently for using these rights. Email us and we will honor them as the law requires. We do not sell or "share" personal information as those terms are defined in state privacy laws.
Security
We use industry-standard protections: encrypted connections, access rules that keep each member's data to that member, and limited staff access. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot promise absolute security. If we learn of a breach that affects you, we will notify you as the law requires.
Age limit
Beer KC is for people 21 and older. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 21. If you believe someone under 21 has an account, email us and we will remove it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Beer KC grows. When we make a meaningful change we will update the date at the top and tell you in the app or by email. Using Beer KC after a change means you accept the updated policy.
